Hailing from Wales, UK, Aaron brings a rich background in football and a deep-seated passion for coaching to North Toronto Soccer Club. His journey began in the UK, where he honed his skills playing for the local football club, Gaerwen FC, and representing his school team in various sports, including tennis, track and field while practicing martial arts out side of school. Born into a sports-centric family, Aaron’s father, uncle, Grandpa, and sister all shared his enthusiasm, with his dad serving as a football coach for over a decade.
Aaron’s early playing days were marked by versatility, with roles ranging from winger to striker. However, at the onset of his 14-year journey in senior football, encompassing both college and semi-pro levels, a coach astutely converted him into a central midfielder. This diverse experience allowed him to grasp the intricacies of different positions within a team, fostering a belief that every player should explore various roles to become well-rounded.
Despite his youth, Aaron embarked on his coaching journey at the age of 16, stepping into the role of head coach for an under-12 team when the coach departed. Embracing the responsibility, he acknowledged making mistakes but viewed them as valuable learning opportunities, shaping his coaching philosophy.
Currently holding a master’s degree in sports law and a UEFA B license, Aaron’s commitment to excellence is unwavering. Actively pursuing Canadian soccer licenses, he aims to deepen his understanding of the Canadian coaching landscape.
Aaron’s coaching philosophy revolves around creating a positive learning environment where young players can express themselves, fostering confidence, enjoyment, and overall development. He encourages curiosity, urging young players to constantly question the game, seeking answers to the ‘why, where, when, how, and what’ for a profound understanding.
As a coach in the OPDL, Aaron works with the 2010 and 2011 girls’ program. Anticipating the winter season, he is dedicated to preparing the team for the upcoming summer challenges, driven by a commitment to lifelong learning.
A perpetual learner, Aaron’s advice to young coaches is simple yet profound: learn daily, be authentic, understand each player individually, maintain an enjoyable atmosphere, and seek guidance from more experienced coaches. With an unwavering dedication to self-improvement, Aaron is on a mission to be the best coach he can be, inspiring both players and fellow coaches alike
