North Toronto players past and present have been representing their respective national teams at various levels, so here’s a round-up of the recent news.
Canada
The Canada Women’s National Team booked their spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics this week with victory over Jamaica, with a squad that included former North Toronto Soccer players Olivia Smith and Quinn.
Quinn played the full 90 minutes in the first leg, which CANWNT won 2-0, before Smith made a late substitute appearance in their following 2-1 victory that guaranteed qualification.
Guyana
Raven Edwards-Dowdall played for North Toronto Soccer in the League1 Ontario Women’s Premier Division and Women’s Reserve Division this season, and was recently called by the Guyana national team for their Concacaf Gold Cup qualification matches.
Goalkeeper, Edwards-Dowdall, made a substitute appearance in last weekend’s 5-0 win against Dominica, having been on the bench in the 2-1 loss to Antigua and Barbuda.
Portugal
Another L1O goalkeeper, Sierra Cota-Yarde, was recently selected by the Portugal women’s senior national team for their UEFA Nations League matches in September.
She featured on the bench for Portugal’s loss to France and victory against Norway, and the side face Austria later in October. They are currently second in Group A2 after two matches.
Italy
Cat Cappiello was a regular in the team that enjoyed an undefeated season in the L1O Women’s Reserve Division this year, and was recently selected for the Italian U19 Women’s team.
Italy have qualification games for the U19 European Championship coming up against Hungary, Northern Ireland, and France in October.
