For the past year, I’ve been refereeing house league games for kids aged 7 to 12 in 5v5, 7v7, and 9v9 playing formats. Even during this past indoor season, after a full spring and summer of officiating in 2024, these games still presented challenges for me. I had to work on being more patient when making calls, handling negative feedback from coaches and players, and building confidence when making decisions on the field.
Over time, all of my experiences on the field have helped me grow more comfortable. Now when I ref these age groups, it no longer feels intimidating. I feel calm and confident in my role.
This past month, the next step in my reffing journey was officiating U13/14 age groups on a full-sized 11v11 field. The older age of players, larger field, and added technical officiating components was intimidating.
I was nervous about working with Assistant Referees (ARs), since it introduced a new level of communication and coordination. I also knew that older age groups often have more knowledge and passion for the game, which can lead to more vocal reactions from players, coaches, and even parents.
Before my first full field game, one of my Club Referee Mentors, Kate, advised me to stay calm, take each situation as it comes, and listen carefully throughout the match.
When I blew the whistle to start the game, I immediately noticed how much more space I had to cover. At times, I was unsure who the ball went out on or whether I had missed a foul, but I looked at the ARs and saw them signaling to help. Later in the game, a goal was scored, and before signaling to the center, I noticed the ARs flag was raised for offside.
All of these moments really came together for me as I reflected on my performance after the game. I realized that this was a team effort. While I’m the one making final decisions, the ARs manage their quarter and help guide the game just as much. We rely on each other.
This first 11v11 game helped me feel so much more confident with offside calls, the larger field, and working as part of a referee team. I’m feeling excited and prepared to officiate at the Spring Recreation Festival this coming weekend, and I’m looking forward to continuing to grow and improve with a supportive crew around me.
